iControl Deploys iDAC-SAT for Remote Monitoring and Control

of Natural Gas Compressors Via The Internet

(San Jose, CAMar. 13, 2002) iControl Incorporated, a leader in remote control and data acquisition via the Internet, today announced the successful deployment in Texas of its latest addition to the iControl product family, iDAC-SAT.  iDAC-SAT collects data from remotely located equipment, then transmits the data via iControl’s onboard conversion software (iGATE) and embedded satellite modem to the iControl web tools (iVIEW).  The iVIEW account provides customers with tools for analyzing, archiving, event notification, and reporting the data.  iVIEW also provides a bi-directional link back to the iDAC-SAT unit, so the customer can issue directives to the remote equipment.

The Texas deployment includes monitoring of twelve analog channels that represent pressures, temperatures, battery voltage, speed and vibration of the compressor.  Unlike other remote monitoring systems, iControl’s unit is a multipoint data collection system that stores the data onboard the iDAC unit and uploads the data to the Internet on a scheduled basis.  The customer sets threshold monitoring points via their iVIEW web account.  The iDAC software is updated with the new ranges and will issue alerts via pagers, cell phones, or emails to the support personnel.  In a one-month period, iControl’s solution was able to identify two pending failures on the compressor and alert technicians to the condition.  The technicians were able to view the collected data and quickly ascertain the corrective action required to prevent the compressor from going down.

As in any industry, increasing uptime of remote equipment increases the revenue and margin of the service company and their customers.  The data collected is also being used to correctly size the remote equipment so that it is always operating at peak efficiency.  Because the data is automatically collected and posted to a common location, departments within a company and along the supply-chain are able to access the information simultaneously expediting financial reports and projections, inventory replenishment, and engineering upgrades.

iDAC-SAT’s embedded satellite modem offers many advantages over the fixed-satellite systems currently used by other remote monitoring vendors.  Installation of the iDAC-SAT unit can be accomplished in less than ten minutes by simply connecting the data cable, placing the unit outside with a view of the sky, and tightening the mounting bolts.  Fixed-satellite dishes are more expensive and require professional installation.  The ease of installation of the iDAC-SAT and the broad coverage satellite networks provide allows companies to relocate their remote systems and the monitoring hardware without any additional expenses.

iControl also offers other iDAC units with embedded cellular (analog and digital), RF (2.4GHz and 900MHz), phone line, Ethernet, and serial connections to the Internet.
