Tracking of marine assets has become increasingly difficult due to the significant increase in the number of assets being shipped and the number of transitions an asset goes through from initial departure to final destination. Container ships have also increased in size, with today’s largest ships capable of delivering to a single terminal up to 7,500 20-foot containers. Up until a few years ago, the main concerns facing commercial and government agencies when shipping assets were timely delivery and loss prevention.
